Mr. Terry W. Prather

Mr. Terry W. Prather is a distinguished figure who currently serves as the Board Chair for Visit Orlando and the Chairman of the Board for Dr. Phillips Charities. With over 29 years of experience in the hospitality and tourism industry, Mr. Prather is a celebrated tourism executive. And holds the historic distinction of becoming the first African American president of a major theme park.  However, Mr. Prather's impressive career trajectory is underscored by his resilience and determination. Starting in maintenance and water quality for SeaWorld San Antonio in 1988, he steadily rose through the ranks. His career saw him serve as the Managing Director of San Antonio's Witte Museum and later as the President of Six Flags New Orleans. Subsequently, he assumed the role of President of Six Flags America in Bowie, Md., before returning to SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment in May 2008. His notable roles include serving as the former President of SeaWorld Orlando. Within SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment and Corporate Senior VP of Operations. In his roles at SeaWorld, Mr. Prather spearheaded the long-range planning, daily operations, and conservation initiatives of the world's most popular marine-life park. Furthermore, his responsibilities extended to overseeing two sister properties, Discovery Cove and Aquatica.   Beyond his illustrious career, his deep commitment to community development is evident in his recent seven-year tenure as the Chief Operating Officer of Lift Orlando, a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening communities. As a founding Board member and in his various capacities, he collaborated with residents, business leaders, and community partners, to strengthen the neighborhoods of West Lakes through mixed-income housing, cradle-to-career education pathways, health and wellness services, and economic viability opportunities. Mr. Prather is also actively engaged in the community, serving on various boards. His commitment to community service is reflected in his current and former involvement with organizations such as the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, Bethune-Cookman University, Smithsonian National Zoo, Visit Florida, Maryland Tourism Development Board, New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Corporation, New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the United Way of Greater New Orleans. Together with his wife Shayla, Prather shares five adult children and ten grandchildren.
